Excerpt from a Victor Borge show which took place at The Glass Hall Theatre in Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark (1970).

Børge Rosenbaum (3 January 1909 - 23 December 2000), known professionally as Victor Borge, was a Danish comedian, conductor, and pianist who achieved great popularity in radio and television in the United States and Europe. His blend of music and comedy earned him the nicknames "The Clown Prince of Denmark", "The Unmelancholy Dane" and "The Great Dane".

==============================================
I have uploaded this video with English subtitles, as a gesture to all non-Danish speaking fans of Mr. Borge. I think they add a lot of value for many viewers. Enjoy !
==============================================

From a desktop computer, click the CC icon in the lower right corner of the video to turn subtitles on or off. Click the Settings icon to switch to another language (if available) or to turn on auto-translate to your preferred language. On an Ipad, the CC icon is located in the upper right corner.

If you would like to translate the subtitles into your own language, then drop me a mail (check the About tab of my channel), and I will send you the English subtitles as a text file. You will then get my timing "for free" (please note that only the Danish speech part has been subtitled). You can now create your own file with subtitles, which you can mail back to me. You are also much welcome to translate the video title and description as well. Thanks in advance!

      @Peter Wood There is a recording of claire de lune somewhere on youtube and when I first listened to it I was amazed by his play. There was so much love he put into the music and his touch was so delicate. I don't think I have ever seen anyone play like this.

      I heard a story about a show he did where he noticed a group in the front that wasn't laughing at any of the jokes, no matter what he tried, so he eventually just asked them what the problem was. I think it was an English show, and the group didn't speak English. They could barely put together "we came to hear the music, please play the music". And he did, immediately.

      @craig woltz I agree, I like Borge as he comedically presents challenges to performance etiquitte and pokes fun at the overly obsessive personality concert pianist possess. I would page turn for some of my colleagues when performing chamber music and I found that more stressful than performing myself. I once mistakingly turned a page back for a Beethoven violin sonata due to a repeat in the first variation as I missed the double barline and thought it was repeating from the beginning. Luckily it did not mess up the pianist, but he gave me a look of pure disdain, lol. Speaking of Henry Purcell, check out his song "Once, Twice, Thrice". It is a hoot. "Once, Twice, Thrice, I Julia try'd, The scornful Puss as oft deny'd, And since I can no better thrive, I'll cringe to ne'er a Bitch alive: So kiss my Arse".

      @Big L That is quite true, but the artists you mentioned were also extremely talented (some say genius’) in their fields. The topic at hand was really related to comedy and I find that many of today’s “top” comedians who find it necessary to use profanity every other word are sorely lacking in that attribute.

    Apparently, when he was playing the music upside down or sideways, he was really playing the notes as they were- upside down and sideways. Extraordinarily accomplished (as well as being so funny)!

      The notes on the pages look more like they belong to some etudes or practice material than the actual songs he is playing. He's got the whole bit memorized for sure and is just using the paper for comedic effect.

      Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on which perspective you are in) he’s not. His music are deliberately composed to make the audiences to establish the connection between the original music and the “flipped” music, which makes the joke works. But if you really try to strictly play the music upside down, it would be different from this and sounds more unpleasant.

      @A fat burn victim • 14 years ago upside down is easy - the staff has 5 lines, which when upside down, still looks like a staff. inverted, the notes are obviously in the wrong places, but they are still correct notes and can be read as such. as far as sideways goes, i have no idea. maybe he plays all the notes in one line as a chord or something
